Calcium Aluminosilicate: A Versatile Mineral with Broad Industrial Applications

Calcium aluminosilicate (CAS) is a naturally occurring or synthetically produced compound that belongs to the broader class of aluminosilicates—minerals composed primarily of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen, with calcium acting as a stabilizing cation. Widely known for its thermal stability, low density, and structural integrity, calcium aluminosilicate is a material of high industrial significance across sectors such as food additives, ceramics, construction, and pharmaceuticals.

Composition and Structure

Chemically, calcium aluminosilicate is typically represented by the formula CaAl₂Si₂O₈, and occurs in nature as anorthite, a feldspar mineral. It consists of a three-dimensional framework of [SiO₄] and [AlO₄] tetrahedra interconnected through shared oxygen atoms, with calcium ions balancing the negative charge introduced by the substitution of Al³⁺ for Si⁴⁺.

Industrial and Commercial Applications

  1. Food Additive (E556):Calcium aluminosilicate is approved by the FDA and EU as a food additive, primarily used as an anti-caking agent. It prevents clumping in powdered or granulated products such as salt, spices, and non-dairy creamers. It is non-toxic and inert when consumed in approved quantities.
